I crossed the finish line in a time of 4h14min20sec, for the 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21km run, placing me 9th PRO overall (man/woman combined). Over 8,000 athletes took to the start line. Coming out of the water in first place with a 1min47sec lead, I set off on the fairly flat course along the east coast of Taiwan Island. It was raining and the conditions were very, very humid. I cycled the 90km on my road bike - and not on a time trial bike, compared to all my competitors - which made my performance all the more satisfying. I started the run in 3rd position, 3min01sec behind 2nd. As the km went by, my speed increased without me noticing - my average was 3.59 min/km - and I made a magnificent comeback to take 2nd place behind Els Visser, my teammate. I had a great time throughout the race, I felt good and in great shape. I'm really pleased to see my progress after the last few months of hard training. Hard work pays off and that's great. A special thank you to the race organisers, Challenge Family, for the superb organisation for the PRO athletes and their welcome in Taitung. A great way to close these 4 months spent in Asia and to open my long-distance season.
